Headshot of CJ Gilbert, Data Analyst

from teacher
to data analyst

If my professional life were a play, the first act would show me in love with teaching math and English to high school and middle school students. As a math teacher, I modelled for students how to think analytically, be persistent, and engage in creative problem solving. As an English teacher, I demonstrated how tailoring words and visuals for an intended audience can make a profound impact. My passion was for helping others better understand complex subjects and empowering them to act to improve their lives.

That is still my passion.

I believe in the power of data to help make the world a better place. That’s why I’ve worked hard to become proficient in the tools that allow us to harness that power – tools like Excel, SQL, Tableau, and Python.

The ‘second act’ of my life has been about adding those technical skills to the ‘soft’ skills that made me a highly effective teacher in an urban district. Those ‘soft’ skills will also be vital to my work as a data analyst — skills like:

  • Organization – managing multiple high-priority projects in parallel by selecting appropriate organizational tools and engaging in meticulous record-keeping.

  • Communication – crafting clear, consistent, and timely communication with all stakeholders as well as cultivating a culture where their questions, concerns, suggestions are valued and incorporated into the analytics process.

  • Ownership – believing that what I do matters and taking responsibility for making sure the job gets done right.

I’m eager to find a junior or associate-level data analyst position with an organization tackling the kinds of challenges where I could contribute both my analytical mindset to help solve problems and my love of data storytelling to help motivate action.

In addition to the daytime fun of playing about with data, my evenings and weekends are given over to simple joys which most often include

  • taking walks around Kalamazoo, Michigan,

  • reading voraciously,

  • playing games with my family, and

  • supervising the mischief caused by our two rescue bunnies, Nutmeg and Teela.
